Plane quartics with at least 8 hyperinflection points

A recent result shows that a general smooth plane quartic can be recovered from its 24 inflection lines and a single inflection point. Nevertheless, the question whether or not a smooth plane curve of degree at least 4 is determined by its inflection lines is still open. Over a field of characteristic 0, we show that it is possible to reconstruct any smooth plane quartic with at least 8 hyperinflection points by its inflection lines. Our methods apply also in positive characteristic, where we show a similar result, with two exceptions in characteristic 13

Recovering plane curves of low degree from their inflection lines and inflection points

In this paper we consider the following problem: is it possible to recover a smooth plane curve of degree at least three from its inflection lines? We answer positively to the posed question for a general smooth plane quartic curve, making the additional assumption that also one inflection point is given, and for any smooth plane cubic curve.Comment: 24 page

Let CC be a general plane quartic and let Fl(C){\rm Fl}(C) denote the configuration of inflection lines of CC. We show that if DD is any plane quartic with the same configuration of inflection lines Fl(C){\rm Fl}(C), then the quartics CC and DD coincide.Comment: 21 pages, to appear in Transactions of the American Mathematical Societ

The Fascist University Group of Turin and the youth's art commissions. The case history of the first documentary exhibition of goliardic life (1933)

The purpose of the research is to do an initial analysis of the Fascist University Group of Turin (GUF) in the fields of patronage and production of art pieces. These works are connected to the decoration of buildings and the organization of exhibitions, at a local level (1928-33) and then for Littoriali della Cultura e dell’Arte , promoted by the National Fascist Party (1934-39). The choice of the First Documentary Exhibition of Goliardic Life as an exemplifying case history is due to the na- ture of the materials showed: the documents - gonfalons, parchments, photos... - sent from all over Italy are inserted in a set-up enriched by sculptures and paintings made by students of the University, the Polytechnic University and the Academy of Fine Arts

The determinants of eco innovation in green supply chains: evidence form an Italian sectoral study

    Get PDF
In the last years attention has increased to the eco-innovation topic. Empirical studies have demonstrated that innovating firms grow faster, have higher productivity and are more profitable than their less innovative counterparts (Geroski et al., 1993; Roper and Hewitt-Dundas, 1998). Drawing upon a database of over 300 enterprises operating within eight defined green production chains working in the Province of Milan, this paper assesses the determinants and drawbacks of innovation. In particular, using an econometrical approach, we tested the following propositions: a) small dimension of enterprises is an obstacle to their innovation power; b) The adoption of an international strategy of production and commercialisation is an opportunity and a stimulus to eco-innovation; c) cooperation with research partners can help SMEs to overcome difficulties and help them to develop and offer eco-sustainable products and services. The econometric analysis shows a positive impact of dimension and level of internationalization on innovation capabilities. In addition, cooperation with research centers and access to capital market are positively related with effective innovations.SME, eco-innovation, supply chain, green economy.

On the peritidal cycles and their diagenetic evolution in the Lower Jurassic carbonates of the Calcare Massiccio Formation (Central Apennines)

This paper shows the environmental changes and high-frequency cyclicity recorded by Lower Jurassic shallow- water carbonates known as the Calcare Massiccio Formation which crop out in the central Apennines of Italy. Three types of sedimentary cycle bounded by subaerial erosion have been recognized: Type I consists of a shallowing upward cycle with oncoidal floatstones to rudstones passing gradationally up into peloidal packstone alternating with cryptoalgal laminites and often bounded by desiccation cracks and pisolitic-peloidal wackestones indicating a period of subaerial exposure. Type II shows a symmetrical trend in terms of facies arrangement with peloidal packstones and cryptoalgal laminites present both at the base and in the upper portion of the cycle, separated by oncoidal floatstones to rudstones. Type III displays a shallowing upward trend with an initial erosion surface overlain by oncoidal floatstones to rudstones that, in turn, are capped by pisolitic-peloidal wackestones and desiccation sheet cracks. Sheet cracks at the top of cycles formed during the initial phase of subaerial exposure were successively enlarged by dissolution during prolonged subaerial exposure. The following sea-level fall produced dissolution cavities in subtidal facies, while the successive sea-level rise resulted in the precipitation of marine cements in dissolution cavities. Spectral analysis revealed six peaks, five of which are consistent with orbital cycles. While a tectonic control cannot be disregarded, the main signal recorded by the sedimentary succession points toward a main control related to orbital forcing. High frequency sea-level fluctuations also controlled diagenetic processes

Immanent Critique of Capitalism as a Form of Life. On Rahel Jaeggi’s Critical Theory

    Get PDF
An immanent critique of capitalism as a form of life: this is one of the crucial points of the new critical theory proposed by Rahel Jaeggi, and it is to this conceptual point, which includes various themes, that the present special issue of Critical Horizons is mainly devoted. This special issue offers some considerations above all of Jaeggi’s programme aimed at developing the key features of an immanent critique of capitalism as a form of life – rather than on topics like alienation, solidarity or progress. More particularly, at the heart of our critical discussions there are five basic theoretical elements to this research programme: immanent critique, the critique of ideology, the critique of capitalism, the concept of form of life, and the economy in a wide sense. In so doing, in the pages of Critical Horizons we have continued the critical discussion started in a workshop held at the University of Parma in 2017, which started from five of Jaeggi’s essays devoted to these five topics, collected by Marco Solinas in a book entitled Forms of Life and Capitalism.5Introduction to the Special Issue of the journal "Critical Horizons" dedicate do Rahel's Jaeggi social philosoph

The Distance to NGC 5904 (M 5) via the Subdwarfs Main Sequence Fitting Method

We present a determination of the distance modulus of the globular cluster NGC 5904 (M 5), obtained by means of the subdwarf main-sequence fitting on the (V,V-I) color-magnitude diagram. The subdwarf sample has been selected from the HIPPARCOS catalog in a metallicity range homogeneous with the cluster ([Fe/H] \~= -1.1). Both the cluster and the subdwarfs have been observed with the same telescope+instrument+filters setup (namely, ESO-NTT equipped with the SUSI2 camera), in order to preserve homogeneity and reduce systematic uncertainties. A set of archival HST data has then been used to obtain a deep and precise ridge line. These have been accurately calibrated in the ground photometric system by using the NTT data and used to fit the cluster distance modulus. By adopting the most commonly accepted values for the reddening, E(B-V) = 0.035 and 0.03, we obtain respectively mu_0 = 14.44 +- 0.09 +- 0.07 and mu_0 = 14.41 +- 0.09 +- 0.07, in agreement with recent determinations.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

What factors influence the uptake of GPP (Green Public Procurement) practices? New evidence from an Italian survey

    Get PDF
Green Public Procurement (GPP) is becoming a cornerstone of environmental policies both at European Union and Member State level. Drawing upon a database of public authorities located in three Italian Regions, this paper assesses the determinants and drawbacks of green procurement adoption. In particular, using an econometrical approach we tested the following propositions: i) the existing awareness on GPP practices, tools and regulations does support public authorities to develop GPP strategies; (ii) the support of external experts in purchasing function does support public authorities to develop GPP practices; (iii) the small dimension of public authority is an obstacle to adopting GPP practices; (iv) ISO 14001 certified public authorities are more likely to develop GPP practices. The econometric analysis shows that the dimension of public authorities and the level of awareness of the existing tools for supporting GPP have a positive and significant effect on the probability that they adopt GPP practices.green public procurement, local authorities, ISO 14001, environment.
